I need to drive from Guanajuato, Mexico, to Las Vegas, NV. All of the route-planning websites suggest I first drive straight north to Texas (either Eagle Pass, Del Rio, or Laredo) and then head west. Looking at maps, though, it appears a much shorter route would be to head more northwest, through Chihuahua and Nuevo Casas Grandes, and then cross the border at Douglas, Arizona. I would appreciate any suggestions as to the pros and cons of this route.

See site below. Add a few hours to the time it allows. As you may already know, driving in Mexico always takes longer than planned.
